What is DTY Knit Fabric?
DTY (Draw Textured Yarn) knit fabric is a material made from polyester or nylon yarn that has been crimped to create bulk, softness, and stretch. This construction gives the fabric a cotton-like feel with high durability, making it a popular choice for sportswear, loungewear, and home textiles.
Nova Knitting uses KARL MAYER machines to produce DTY knit fabric, ensuring superior tension control and uniform stitch quality, resulting in a softer, more consistent fabric with excellent dimensional stability. This advanced engineering also enables higher production efficiency and fewer defects, which we at Nova Knitting rely on for premium sportswear, loungewear, and bedding.
The Advantages of DTY knit Fabrics
Soft, cotton-like hand feel with good drape and breathability, while allowing the superior durability and stretch of textured polyester or nylon. The bulkiness, coupled with moisture-wicking capabilities, made it an ideal choice for activewear, loungewear, and seamless wear.

DTY knit Fabrics’ Applications
DTY knit fabric is comfortable, stretchy, and moisture-wicking in nature; therefore, it is widely used in making sportswear, loungewear, seamless wear underwear, socks, and home textiles. It is also a popular fabric for T-shirts, leggings, and high-performance apparel where comfort & durability are important.
Customizable of DTY knit Fabric
Customizable in yarn denier, filament count, and color (as well as fabric weight), DTY knit fabric may also be treated with performance finishes such as moisture-wicking or anti-pilling™. This makes it flexible, so we at Nova Knitting can specify for certain applications.

DTY Knit Fabric: Key Properties, Uses, and Shopping Tips
Having soft, stretchable, versatile material that can be used for anything (from everyday wear to athletic wear), DTY knit fabric has become one of the best choices among home sewers as well as professional designers. DTY (Drawn Textured Yarn) is a knit polyester-spandex fabric that provides a soft, brushed feel and good four-way stretch for a wide range of projects. The special production process for the unique stuff involves heating to set the yarn fibers and twisting them, resulting in materials that drape well and resist fading.
We find that sewists tend to use DTY fabric when they want something more versatile for different types of outfits. This fabric is perfect for fitted clothes like leggings and dresses, but has enough drape for billowy tops and loungewear. That knowledge may help you determine whether it’s the right knit fabric for your project!
This guide will take you through everything you need to know about DTY knit fabric. You will discover how it is built, its features, its uses, and how to choose the right type for your needs.
DTY Knit Construction
DTY knit fabric is made using a particular type of yarn production process that turns smooth synthetic filaments into textured, stretchable fibers containing fluffiness and resilience.
Some fabrics might appear perfectly fine in the clothes shop, but when worn, they tend to collapse, along with all those pulled fibers, depending on how the garment was sewn (how stiff or tensioned the seams are).
What Is DTY (Drawn Twist Yarn)?
DTY (Drawn Twist Yarn) is a process for creating filament yarns that have been drawn by machines using controlled rates and temperatures.
In short, DTY = Draw Textured Yarn, not Drawn Twist Yarn. DTY is formed by continuously drawing and texturing the Partially Oriented Yarn (POY) using false-twist texturing. Between 800 and 1,000 meters per minute, friction discs twist the yarn as it passes through a main heater.
Relaxing the twisted yarn in a cooling region induces helical crimp patterns throughout the filaments. This allows DTY knit fabric to retain this bulk & stretch permanently, so it remains comfortable and elastic at all times. A second heater subsequently stabilizes the crimp to minimize excessive shrinkage.
For DTY used in knit fabrics, the crimp contraction is usually 20%-30%. Heavier weights with higher contraction percentages create warm, loftier fabrics that are great for winter. Lower percentages create lighter-weight, more breathable summer fabrics.
What is DTY Hook? How Is DTY Knit Different From Other Knits?
The DTY knit fabric also has a surface texture, and its natural stretch is better than that of cotton jersey or FDY knits. DTY filaments, crisply crimped, trap air volumes within the fabric structure, allowing the garments to provide warmth and comfort through faster moisture-wicking performance.
Frequently working with intermingling specifications for DTY optimization in Knitting. For Circular Knitting Machines, Slightly Intermingled DTY, 40–50 knots per meter of SIM type. The individual filaments are fanned together using air-jet knots without incurring excessive stiffness.
Key differences in DTY knit:
- Good recovery: DTY has better dimensional stability than flat filament yarns
- Texture: d. Soft and cottony hand feel vs e. Smooth and plastic-like surface
- Bulk: More volume per weight results in thicker fabrics
- Wrinkle-resistant: the textured structure prevents permanent fastness
Popular denier specs for DTY knit are 75D/36F for lightweight and 150D/48F for activewear. More filament counts, such as 144F, make micro-DTY softer against skin.
Related Knits Overview: ITY and FTY
Interlock Textured Yarn-ITY fabric uses DTY (a polyester filament) in a specific double-knit structure. The interlock is a stable fabric that has the same detail on both sides of the piece, with no ribbing. ITY is mainly found in dresses and skirts, where drape and recovery are essential.
FTY is also known as Flat Textured Yarn, but this term appears rarely in technical specifications. Although some manufacturers define it as standard DTY with lower crimp contraction.
The only significant difference is in the construction process, not in the type of yarn. ITY refers to how we knit the fabric (interlock pattern), whereas DTY denotes the yarn itself. In fact, most of the ITY fabric uses DTY as its base yarn.
Fabric Type | Yarn Base | Primary Use | Key Feature |
DTY Knit | DTY | Athletic wear, t-shirts | High stretch, moisture-wicking |
ITY | DTY | Dresses, formal wear | Excellent drape, no-run structure |
Jersey | Various | Basic apparel | Single-knit, light to medium weight |
Environmental Considerations in DTY Production
DTY, in particular when made from post-consumer PET bottles, reduces energy requirements during production by about 50% compared with virgin polyester. To ensure rDTY traceability, we procure it from suppliers that hold GRST certification for recycled content.
Dope-dyed DTY then skips the need for a dyeing step and adds color to the polymer in-process during melt spinning. This means around 30 liters of water per kilogram of yarn are saved. Dope-dyed DTY fabric is superior in color fastness and UV resistance compared to conventionally dyed fabrics.
The art of the texture itself consumes planetary-type energy for heating and high-velocity mechanical activities. Modern machines have been developed with heat-recovery systems that capture waste heat from cooling zones and return it to the primary heaters.
Chemical additives represent yet another environmental concern. For performance fabrics, we specify antimicrobial or UV-resistant DTY (draw texturized yarn), but these can only be treated with materials approved by safety standards like OEKO-TEX to ensure that harmful substances do not end up in finished garments.
How is the Performance of DTY Fabrics?
The excellent mechanical and handfeel properties of DTY knit fabrics make them suitable for everyday wear and engineered applications. DTY yarn itself is textured with a structure that introduces permanent crimp in the filaments, resulting in altered drape, hand, and performance characteristics of fabrics over time.
Drape and Flow Characteristics
Depending on the yarn denier and fabric construction, DTY knit fabrics generally have a moderate to excellent drape. Due to the crimped structure of DTY yarn, it produces a soft, resilient knit with good drape that does not cling to the body.
Denier ranges from 30 to 220, depending on the desired material strength—lighter deniers, such as 75D or 100D, create garments with a fluid drape appropriate for dresses and blouses. Heavier deniers like the 150D or 300D will add more body and drape (therefore, these are good choices for open jackets and home fibers). Filament count also matters—a higher filament count (72F, 96F, 144F) spreads human resources more evenly across the fabric floor, improving drape quality.
The finish on DTY is often Bright or trilobal, promoting visual movement in the fabric, while semi-dull finishes produce a more matte, natural look. The workings of the fabric cause DTY fabrics to have consistent drape performance due to the texturing process that gives it shape, meaning that there is no stiffness as seen in untextured polyester knits.
Softness and Comfort
DTY knit provides a soft hand because the bulked, crimped filaments create air pockets in the yarn structure. The texture imitates the hand of natural fibers such as cotton, but has all of the durability and strength that polyester is known for.
Finer denier per filament (dpf) values yield softer fabrics. For instance, a 75D/72F DTY yarn affords a much softer hand than a 75D/36F because the identical total denier is evenly distributed throughout more filaments. The filaments are gradually thinner, decreasing skin friction on the surface.
In fact, the very process of texturing contributes to comfort by creating permanent loops and coils that allow the fabric to compress slightly under pressure. It makes the feel of DTY knit plush smoother than smooth FDY knits. Heat-setting in yarn production fixes the crimp, which stays soft after up to forty wash cycles.
Stretch and Recovery Properties
Derived from direct-stretch fibers, DTY has an inherent ability to provide 15–25% stretch at break with strong elastic recovery; when made into knitted fabrics, it returns to its original form while maintaining the natural bounce of all DTY knit fabrics. Crimped filaments behave as coiled springs: they stretch under tension and return to their original length when the force is released.
Key stretch characteristics:
- Circular knits and their bi-directional stretch (horizontal as well as vertical)
- Does not lose shape after wear and washing
- Dimensional stability when properly heat-set
The level of stretch depends on the knit structure. The knits in jersey stretch more across-wise than lengthwise, while the rib knits stretch a lot both ways. DTY yarn is supported by elastane (spandex) added through air covering or core spining, making the yarn even more flexible; this combination makes it proper for rigid clothing and activewear.
How the recovery rate affects a garment’s durability. DTY knit fabrics are well-engineered, and stretch returns to 95-98%, preventing sagging at knees, elbows, or waistlines during prolonged wear.
Wrinkle Resistance and Easy Care
Polyester filament has low moisture absorption and high resilience, so DTY knit fabric is wrinkle-resistant. The knit’s structure distributes stress across loops rather than along folded lines, minimizing creasing even further.
Care advantages:
- Washable in a washing machine at 30-40°C
- Quick-dry due to low moisture-holding capacity.
- Most applications require no ironing.
- Upon correct heat-setting, shrink-resistant
Textured DTY knit also helps obscure small wrinkles that occur during packing or storage. DTY knit is also different than woven polyester, which can show crisp creases; DTY knit drapes and releases finishing tension when left to hang.
DTY fabrics experience little care-related degradation. Mildew cannot grow on synthetic fibers, and colorfastness remains stable through several washings when proper dyeing methods are used. That makes the DTY knit suitable for travel wear, uniforms, and other applications where low-maintenance performance is critical.
Popular Applications for DTY Knit
DTY knit fabric works well in clothing and home goods because it stretches, feels soft, and holds up to regular use. The material adapts to different product needs while keeping costs reasonable for manufacturers.
Everyday Apparel
We see DTY knit used regularly in casual clothing like t-shirts, dresses, and skirts. The fabric drapes nicely and moves with the body without losing its shape after washing. This makes it practical for the clothes people wear often.
The material holds color well, which means printed designs and solid colors stay bright longer. Many clothing brands blend DTY knit with small amounts of spandex to add stretch. This combination creates comfortable everyday pieces that resist wrinkles.
DTY knit fabrics cost less than natural fibers while offering similar comfort levels. The texture feels smooth against the skin, which is why we find it in items worn close to the body. The fabric also dries faster than cotton, which is helpful for people with busy schedules.
Activewear and Athleisure
DTY knit performs especially well in sportswear and athletic clothing. The fabric wicks moisture away from skin during exercise, keeping athletes dry and comfortable. It stretches in all directions and returns to its original shape after movement.
Compression leggings, sports bras, and workout tops frequently use DTY knit blended with elastane. The combination provides muscle support while allowing a full range of motion. The fabric’s lightweight bulk means garments don’t feel heavy during high-intensity training.
We also see DTY fabrics in athleisure wear—clothing designed for both exercise and casual activities. The material looks polished enough for everyday wear while still functioning well during physical activity. It resists pilling better than many alternatives, keeping athletic clothes looking newer, longer.
Loungewear and Sleepwear
Comfort is the main priority for loungewear, and DTY knit delivers soft texture without stiffness. We find this fabric in pajamas, robes, and casual home clothing because it feels gentle and breathable. The material doesn’t restrict movement, which matters for relaxing at home.
DTY knit maintains its shape even after many wash cycles. This durability is important for sleepwear that gets washed frequently. The fabric doesn’t shrink significantly, so garments fit consistently over time.
Many manufacturers brush DTY fabrics to create an even softer hand feel. Double brushed poly spandex blends feel similar to cotton but dry faster and resist wrinkles. These properties make DTY knit practical for clothing worn during sleep and rest.
Home Decor and Accessories
Beyond clothing, we use DTY knit for home textiles such as cushion covers, decorative pillows, and lightweight throws. The fabric takes dye well, allowing for vibrant patterns and colors in home decor items. It resists fading from sunlight better than some natural fibers.
The material works well for items that need regular cleaning. DTY knit holds up to frequent washing without losing texture or color intensity. We also see it in accessories like headbands, bags, and decorative items, where durability and appearance both matter.
The versatility of DTY fabric means it adapts to different home decor styles. Manufacturers can create different finishes and weights to match specific design needs while keeping production costs manageable.
Popular Applications for DTY Knit
As DTY knit is stretchable, it provides a soft touch on the skin with great durability and high performance over time, allowing extensive use in clothing as well as home goods. It tailors the material to various product requirements while remaining cost-effective for manufacturers.
Everyday Apparel
We refer to DTY knit as a common fabric for leisure wear such as t-shirts, dresses, and Skirts. The fabric has a nice flow and moves with the body without losing its shape even after washing. This is practical enough for clothing people put on quite often.
The material colors fast very well, which means printed designs and solid colors remain bright longer. Multiple clothing brands will mix DTY knit with a small amount of spandex to add stretch. It is warm, machine washable, and wrinkle-resistant – the perfect combination for all-day comfort.
DTY knit fabrics are affordable and can offer comfort levels competitive with natural fibers. It has a soft feel on the skin, which is why we typically see this fabric in items worn closest to the body. The material also dries more quickly than cotton, making it suitable for users with hectic schedules.
Activewear and Athleisure
DTY knit is perfect for sportswear and athletic clothing. Moisture-wicking fabric keeps skin dry and comfortable in all weather conditions. The fabric is stretchable and elastic, but will return to its natural form once manipulated.
DTY knit is often a blend with elastane and is found in compression leggings, sports bras, and workout tops. It both supports the muscles and allows for full-range motion. The soft fabric hand gives you a fluffier fit, keeping clothes from feeling heavy while you’re working out.
DTY fabrics are also used for athleisure wear, which refers to clothing designed for both exercise and recreation. Wearable enough to wear regularly, and good when exercising. This gives it better pill resistance than many alternatives, helping athletic clothes look newer for longer.
Loungewear and Sleepwear
Loungewear is all about coziness, and DTY knit offers a soft hand with some bounceback. Because it is soft and airy, we find this fabric in pajamas, robes, and laid-back housewear. The fabric is not restrictive, which makes a difference when you are relaxing at home.
Even after hundreds of wash cycles, DTY knit holds its shape. This is a very important durability for sleepwear that gets washed frequently. Fabric that does not shrink much, so garments wear consistently over time.
Some manufacturers brush the DTY fabrics to give them a softer hand feel. Are similar to the cotton you have posted before: double-brushed poly-spandex blends with the added bonus of drying faster than most fabrics and resisting wrinkles. These features of DTY knit make it an advantageous option for garments used for sleeping and resting.
Home Decor and Accessories
TEY-TRY It is beyond garments; we use DTY knit for home textiles—cushion covers, decorative pillows, and a lightweight throw. It takes dye well, resulting in colorful patterns and hues on home decor items. It is more resistant to sunlight fading than some natural fibers.
This material is excellent for objects that need frequent washing. Gre Tlt DTY knit withstands repeated washing without any loss of texture or vibrancy. We also observe it in accessories like headbands, bags, and decorative items, where we care about both appearance and keeping them together.
DTY fabric is versatile, thus making it suitable for different home decor styles. Manufacturers can produce different weights and finishes to meet specific design needs while keeping costs down.
Caring for DTY Fabric
DTY fabrics are acceptable for machine washing, but cold or warm washes utilizing a gentle cycle should be used. Hot water is not only unnecessary, but over time, it can actually damage the fibers.
Wash using mild detergent (no bleach or harsh chemicals). These products will dissolve polyester fibers and destroy the cloth’s tenderness and elasticity.
Tumble on low heat or hang to dry. Excessive heat may shrink or change the texture of the fabric. DTY: Fabric is made from polyester and dries quickly.
Dryer — Dishes Drying Rack — Take them out of the dryer immediately to prevent wrinkles. DTY knit discourages wrinkles best when we don’t let the material sit wrinkled in the dryer.
If needed, iron on a low setting (but most of the time, DTY resists wrinkling well). Always test a small, hidden area first to ensure the heat does not damage the material.
FAQs
FDY vs DTY fabric: What is the difference?
DTY fabric has a soft, bulky, and stretchy feel with a textured appearance, while FDY fabric is smooth, flat, and strong with a crisp hand feel. Therefore, DTY is preferred for comfortable, elastic garments like sportswear and loungewear, whereas FDY is suited for applications requiring a sleek finish and high durability.
ITY vs DTY fabric: What is the difference?
The main difference lies in texture and construction: DTY (Drawn Textured Yarn) fabric has a textured, slightly irregular surface, while ITY (Interlock Twist Yarn) fabric features a smooth, double-knit surface with a slight sheen. Because of this, DTY is often used for casual garments like activewear and loungewear, whereas ITY is preferred for more polished apparel like dresses, tops, and skirts.
What are the typical uses for this type of polyester knit in apparel and accessories?
DTY knit fabric is mainly used for t-shirts, activewear bottoms, leggings, and casual dress. The unique crimp structure provides ample stretch and recovery, enabling close-fitting garments that are comfortable to wear next to the skin. This is helpful for tops that need to move the way our bodies do without losing their shape.
It is a popular choice with home sewers and small brands for loungewear, yoga pants, and lightweight cardigans. It is soft to the touch and nice, with a weighty bulk that feels good against the skin for everyday wearing. Use it for headbands, infinity scarves, or any baby clothing where a little give is important.
What is the comparison between the ITY jersey with stretch, drape, and feel?
The DTY knit has a supple drape, less structure, and texture. ITY is typically lighter and softer, with better 4-way stretch due to its knit construction. DTY has moderate but good recovery from stretch, slightly heavier weight, and lower fluid drape.
The fabrics are wrinkle-free and colorfast. ITY hangs fluidly over the body, while DTY drapes more loosely and offers a soft body. For some buyers, DTY feels easier to sew under the needle, as it is much less slippery and more stable than Tencel.
What needle, thread, and stitch settings are best for stitching it on a regular sewing machine or serger?
Use a ballpoint or stretch needle of size 75/11 or 90/14. Instead of poking a hole in the fibers, they slide between them, resulting in no snags or skipped stitches. Use a new needle every 8 hours of sewing to ensure your stitches are even.
Polyester thread is good as it has a little give and is similar in strength to the fabric. Use all-purpose thread in a coordinating color for most projects. Cotton thread, which we dislike because it snaps under stress.
For seams, you will want your machine set to a straight stitch or a narrow zigzag. Use a stitch length of 2.5-3 mm to strike a balance between strength and flexibility. Decrease presser foot pressure just a shade, so it does not pull or distort the fabric as it moves through the machine.
Use a four-thread overlock for seams and a three-thread overlock for edging on a serger. Adjust differential feed settings to 1.0 or slightly higher to avoid wavy seams. Do some tests on scraps often before you begin your project
How do I prewash and care for it to minimize shrinkage, pilling, and color fading?
Using a gentle cycle, prewash your knitted fabric in cool or warm water and cut. This removes all the sizing and gives you a relaxed fabric. Polyester knits don’t shrink that much, but saturating this stuff before sewing spares you the surprise.
Hang to dry or dry on low heat. Now set the wrinkles in, and over time, they may shrink a little or a lot. It typically goes into the tumble dryer on low after washing for 10–15 minutes, which starts the drying quickly, followed by the rest of the air-drying.
To limit surface abrasion, turn clothes inside out. This quick trick helps prevent pilling and keeps your colors brighter. Separate colors from white in dark and light.
Skip fabric softener. It can encapsulate polyester fibers and prevent moisture wicking. DTY knit is perfectly fresh and soft when washed with mild detergent.
