What is Nylon Spandex Blend Fabric?
Nylon spandex is a blend of strong nylon fibers and stretchy spandex (usually 80-95% nylon and 5-20% spandex) that creates a fabric with excellent durability, four-way stretch, and shape recovery. The nylon spandex blend provides strength and resistance to wear, while the spandex adds the stretch and flexibility needed for comfortable movement.
The Advantages of Nylon Spandex Fabric
Nylon spandex fabric combines nylon’s strength and softness with spandex’s elasticity, offering excellent four-way stretch, smooth texture, and reliable shape recovery.

Nylon Spandex Fabrics’ Applications

FAQs
what is nylon used for?
Nylon is widely used in apparel such as activewear, swimwear, lingerie, and outerwear because of its strength, smooth feel, and abrasion resistance. It is also valued in industrial applications like ropes, tents, and carpets for its durability and resilience. At Nova Knitting, we often work with nylon spandex blend in performance fabrics where both comfort and long-lasting wear are essential.
What is 4 way stretch nylon spandex fabric?
4-way stretch nylon spandex fabric stretches in both lengthwise and crosswise directions, offering exceptional flexibility and freedom of movement. This structure allows the fabric to move with the body while maintaining excellent shape recovery. It is the preferred choice for performance apparel such as yoga wear, activewear, and swimwear where comfort and fit are essential.
What Can The Nylon Spandex Fabric Be Utilized For More In Clothing & Activewear?
The most common use for nylon spandex tends to be in swimwear, where its four-way stretch and quick-dry characteristics made it perfect for bikinis, one-piece suits and competitive swimsuits. It moves with your body in every position and doesn’t snag on pool edges.
Dancewear and gymnastics leotards rely on nylon spandex because it flows with ease and retains its form throughout intense routines. It is used by dance studios and costume designers for leotards, bodysuits, and unitards.
You are also prone to see it in sports gear: athletic leggings, sports bras, yoga shorts or compression wear. Its ability to stretch and recover repeatedly provides the flexibility needed whilst returning the fabric back to its original shape. Lower weights are better suited for everyday activewear and heavier options for pieces that are specifically compression-heavy.
How does it compare in terms of breathability and stretch recovery when compared with polyester blends?
Nylon-spandex feels softer and silkier than polyester blends, and the color looks richer. But if you’re in the pool every day, polyester wins on chlorine resistance, UV stability, and laundering. For recreational swimwear, polyester offers great comfort and color.
Both fabrics recover their stretch well with proper care. The trade-off? Polyester is more chemical-resistant, while nylon feels nicer to the touch. Nylon also breathes a bit better, though both wick moisture fine.
The standard nylon-spandex ratio for quality performance gear is 70:30. For swimwear or dancewear, go with 80% nylon / 20% spandex—it gives the most stretch, best recovery, and softest feel. 82/18 makes a slightly thicker fabric for compression wear. 85/15 has less stretch, great for rash guards. And 90/10 is low-stretch, perfect for linings or technical panels.
Is the moisture and heat management wicked and you can wear it comfortably in hot weather?
Nylon spandex is moisture-wicking and fast-drying, so it works well in hot weather. Unlike cotton, the fabric is breathable and doesn’t retain heat at all. Cut in styles that allow airflow, it is comfortable enough for summer activities.
Lighter-weight fabrics (between 130 and 150 gsm) breathe better than heavier options. The non-abrasive, smooth surface lets sweat evaporate instead of penetrating the fiber. It helps you remain cool while training or participating in outdoor activities.
Be warned that this material is close to the skin, so garment design counts as much as the fabric. In high heat scenarios, you’ll want more ventilation from a mesh panel or looser cut.
What do buyers look out for in swimwear, especially if it's chlorine-resistant or saltwater-resistant?
We seek out swimwear-grade nylon spandex fabrics. Which is great, but not all nylon spandex is made for use in the water. *Tested for chlorine resistance, UV stability (UPF50+), wet opacity, and quick drying.
Swimsuits are typically made from material with a die between 160 and 180 GSM, suitable for good coverage combined with enough structure in the design. Lighter weights and sizes may become see-through when wet, particularly in pale colours. Before cutting patterns, we always hold up a scrap piece that has been moistened to light.
Nylon spandex holds up through a full season of recreational pool use with proper care. Polyester spandex has a greater chlorine-resistant property than other fabrics, which makes it suitable for regular lap swimming or competitive training. Because saltwater is milder than chlorine, nylon spandex works adequately for coastal and ocean swimwear.
